To learn more about UC Irvine, visit .Human Research Protections (HRP) within the Office of Research is responsible for ensuring the ethical and equitable treatment of all human research subjects in studies conducted by UCI faculty, staff, and students for which Institutional Review Board (IRB) review is required. It is also responsible for ensuring compliance with federal regulations, state laws and University polices, as well as national standards for research involving human participants. HRP staff work directly with the IRB reviewers, investigators, and their staff to assist them with ensuring compliance with IRB requirements for the review human research applications.



Your Role on the Team

Under the general direction of the Senior Director, provides analytical, technical, and professional support to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the UCI research community. From inception to completion, applies federal regulations, state statutes, and/or UC/UCI Human Research Protections policies and procedures to research protocols submitted to the IRB.

Uses advanced human subjects research compliance concepts to interpret highly complex and broad regulations, policies and guidelines. Regularly works on highly complex research compliance issues where analysis requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to anticipate and identify problems and develop and implement the appropriate response and / or action. Serves as a technical expert and advisor to department head.

Administers policies and procedures in designated research compliance area conforming to established federal and state agency regulations. Receives assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals. Provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. Recommends changes to department policies and practices. Identifies risks and responds accordingly. Provides priority setting and work flow analysis.

NOTE: This is primarily a remote position. Infrequently, this position may need, or be required, to work on campus.

Qualifications

  • Managerial experience and demonstrated ability to lead and manage a compliance review board or committee. Required
  • Skill in acquiring, managing and maintaining positive, professional relationships with both regulatory agencies and internal regulatory partners for relevant compliance area. Required
  • Ability to apply a complex array of issues, mental flexibility, and creativity to relevant compliance area Required
  • Advanced knowledge of international guidelines, federal regulations, state statutes and institutional policies and practices for human subjects' protections. Required
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit, supervise, train, lead and motivate staff Required
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive, detailed analyses of complex regulations, guidelines and policies Required
  • Demonstrated self-discipline, independent judgement and ability to maintain workflow with changing priorities and frequent interruptions and to organize and prioritize fluctuating workloads Required
  • Strong proficiency in public speaking, and writing. Required
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology. Preferred
  • Proficiency with computers, including the ability to operate personal computer software with sophisticated retrieval, storage, and merging capabilities. Required

    The expected pay range for this recruitment is $85,400 - $121,100.

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
    • A minimum of 5 years of experience * Minimum 5 years of experience in supervision and human research protection or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
